Houston ISD has cleared the runway for a massive new career and technical education hub on the city's south side, moving a roughly $100 million project from planning into the procurement phase. The center, dubbed the Southside Launchpad, will take over the former Grimes Elementary campus and is designed to operate alongside the district's Barbara Jordan Career Center as a pipeline into high wage, high demand careers with industry credentials attached.
As reported by the Houston Business Journal, the planned facility clocks in at about 215,000 square feet and carries a budget of roughly $100 million. The Business Journal notes that the Launchpad is expected to house programs such as biotechnology, construction management and cybersecurity, and will feature industry grade labs along with credentialing opportunities for high school students.
Houston ISD board paperwork shows trustees signed off on the Southside Launchpad name in May and formally designated the former Grimes Elementary site at 9220 Jutland Road as the project location. The board item sets an opening target of "no later than fall 2028" and describes the campus as the Southside Launchpad: Career and Innovation Center, according to Houston ISD board documents.
How the Launchpad Will Work With Barbara Jordan
HISD materials outline a two center model that pairs the new southside campus with an expanded Barbara Jordan Career Center to widen access across the district. The district's CTE expansion pages state that Barbara Jordan's upgrades will boost capacity from about 900 students to roughly 4,000, and that the Southside Launchpad is projected to serve an additional 3,940 students once it opens, according to HISD's CTE expansion site. The Houston Business Journal has also reported that Barbara Jordan is in line for about $16 million in renovations and a new 29,000 square foot building as part of the broader CTE build out.
Procurement Steps Under Way
The paperwork has already started to move. Public solicitation documents show a demolition package for the old Grimes campus, including a pre proposal conference and site walkthrough held in May as part of a competitive sealed proposal process. The government contracts listing labels the work as the "Southside Launch Pad Career & Technology Center" and lists the project address as 9220 Jutland Road, according to public bid postings.
Local Debate Continues
Plans for centralized, industry grade career centers have sparked plenty of argument in Houston, where parents and some board members worry that consolidating programs could hollow out neighborhood campuses. The Houston Chronicle has documented years of bond era fights over cost and access, and Heights Parents Erupt captured community pushback when HISD proposed pulling magnet and CTE tracks off neighborhood campuses. For many families, the discussion quickly turns from policy talk to logistics: who gets bused where, and how much of a student’s school day will be swallowed by travel time.
What’s Next for Students and Families
HISD says program details, partner agreements and transportation plans are still being hammered out, and that families will be briefed as specific pathways are finalized. District CTE pages highlight industry aligned certifications and dual credit options with local colleges, while noting that final contractor awards and construction timelines hinge on the competitive procurement process and subsequent board approvals.
